disturbing trends

One can only pour gasoline on a fire for so long until a random spark sets the whole pile ablaze.

Create a threat and people prepare

Add tension, make incendiary comments, orchestrate an us vs. them mindset

eventually someone does the unthinkable.

self fulfilling prophesy. God help us all, I pray its the end rather than the beginning.

The whole situation IS disturbing. My people are from that area of Kentucky, just a little farther up the creek, closer to West Virginia, and needless to say there's no love-lost between the Appalachians and the Federal Government.

If you go back and look at the regional history, especially in terms of the government stepping (or being called) into the labor relations/coal miners/union problems, you can see where some of the bad feelings come from. The Coal Creek War, the 3 Day War, the battle at Blair Mtn, the Redneck War and (further west) the Ludlow Massacre all took place in the general vicinity and for the most part are within living memory. Just 2 weeks ago, the National Guard was stationed in Newport for 'crowd control'. And now, the Appalachians are supposed to play nice, let bygones be bygones and allow the Feds on their doorstep? I don't see it happening. The Feds got involved with an entire regions' means of supporting itself and those memories die hard.

This post wasn't intended to be a history on mining and the militia in Appalachian America, but it's something I know a bit about being one generation removed from the hollers of Eastern Kentucky. I grew up listening to my Papaw talking about his time in the mines, as well his Dad's time. Those wounds are still open in many families today.

Is that man's murder acceptable? Absolutely not. Does it surprise me? No.

This is one of the more powerful posts I have read in awhile! I'm currently having personal issues that are caused in part because of the lies from Fox News and others on the right (FYI I'm a registered republican) and this terrible political climate we are now in.

I have become more liberal (mostly socially) lately and this has some of my republican friends and family saying some not so nice things about me.

As a Christian I praying people see they aren't doing God's will. God's will isn't fear and hate!

I'm not surprised it happened either unfortunately. But I do believe there is a correlation between the antigovernment fearmongering going on and the murder of a census worker. Not an IRS agent, FBI, or any other alphabet agency. This guy was a local working part time for the census. The census has been going on as long as we have been a nation. Now its suddenly a political hotbutton!?

I agree with you totally that the anti-government-fear-mongering is feeding an existing problem. Nothing like keeping a wound raw to cause it to fester, you know? (Gross analogy, but there it is.) That man was the 'face' of the business, no different than people berating attendants at gas stations for $4/gal gas.

I find a lot of what is going on in America to be quite scary...and it is definitely being orchestrated. People seem to be so hostile and polarized by the so-called issues. We can only hope that the bloodshed will stop and that people will stop allowing others to do their thinking for them. There is a mob mentality in America and nothing good ever comes of that!

do more people have to get hurt before we realize the madness must end?
