Smuckers...Your Fired!

Our long weekend in four easy picture. First we had a picnic with friends, and what do you ask the vegetarian to bring? Salad of course, actually thats not completely honest, I offered to bring it, what you see is the last of the lettuce before it bolted, the last of the radishes, some baby pea pods and a few smallish onions that were not quite ready...oh and of course Nasturtium flowers which we have in abundance right now. So The lettuce and the peas came out and in went the beans and corn.

Then on the fifth we went strawberry picking and came home with about 15 pounds of berries.

and promptly butchered the 15 pounds of berries

In a recipe that says 8 cups I somehow ended up with nine jars of jam (which is not as foamy as the jar up front would have you believe.)

...twelve pints frozen for smoothies
...and three quarts mashed up for shortcake

Life is good.

Beautiful salad. I just tried my first Nasturtium blossom the other day, and I have vowed to plant lots more next year! I am hoping that mine with self seed.

I always end up bringing the salad to gatherings too. Saturday it was spinach, lettuce, purslane, kohlrabi, broccoli and cucumber--It was fabulous, but all green (All grown within 20 miles). Next year I will plant enough Nasturtiums to make it pretty too!

Yum! Questions - I have nasturtium blossoms right up through the first hard frost, do you lose your flowers early? And when you mash your berries for shortcake, how do you store it? (I am very hungry now and lunch was over three hours ago)

half of the shortcake berries were shortcaked on the spot, the other half is in tupperware in the fridge, we'll be shortcaking again this week.

As for the nasturtiums, they usually stick around a few days each, but keep producing until frost. All of the other stuff except the onions were the last of the spring crops, the nasturtiums are coming up strong now and ought to last the summer.

wow, that's a LOT of strawberries! Lovely Salad! I'm having difficulty with Lettuce being bitter. Some have told me it's just too hot here in So Cal. Do you have any tips?

I love it - the strawberry slaughter! Gorgeous salad! I've just planted some peach-colored nasturtiums. They grow much faster than I expected - a very quick germination period.
